Overview

Sachsenhausen was the largest concentration camp in the Berlin area. It was built as one of the first and served as a model for the Nazis to create others. This tour will guide you through the infamous history of World War II atrocities. You will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge and experience an atmosphere of reflection.

You don't have to stress about limited time or a tight schedule. As soon as the ship docks, you will be welcomed and led to a modern, comfortable and air-conditioned bus.

Your professional driver will ensure a hassle-free and comfortable route, during which you will not only regenerate but also enjoy the picturesque plains of the former East Germany. After 3 hours on the road, we will arrive at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin - a perfect example of the capital's rich architecture.

There, our experienced guide will be waiting to share his extensive knowledge of Berlin's history.

Then, in our comfortable coach, we will drive through Berlin's central park, the Tiergarten. We will remember that the beauty of the city is not only the monuments, but also the lush greenery, so important for a vibrant city. By the way, we will see the famous Victory Column. The golden statue that closely observes the rich life of the city is Victoria, the goddess of victory. She has witnessed many historic moments in Berlin and remains a reminder of the city's turbulent history.

You’ll experience the historic Reichstag building, a reminder of Germany's political past. We will take a moment to reflect on the Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe - a modern work of art with a profound message. Of course, there will also be time for a little rest and a short meal to gather strength for the rest of the tour.

After this short break, we will return to our coach with our guide to go to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. On site, you will learn about the history of this place, witness to the tragedy of the Holocaust. Our guide will share his knowledge, spending more than an hour talking about the significance of the camp and the changes it has undergone over the years.

Afterwards, our modern bus will take you straight to the port. Everything is matched to the ship's schedule, so you are guaranteed a punctual return and a calm boarding.

Please be aware, the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial is roughly a one hour drive from Berlin. The tour is organised to try and minimise time spent on the bus. This is why we visit Sachsenhausen in the afternoon, as it lies between Berlin and Warnemünde – on the way back to port. This is a necessity to see Berlin and Sachsenhausen in a day.

All our shore excursions are tailored to each ship's schedule. They start as soon as the ship arrives, returning with plenty of time before departure. We have been organising land tours for almost a decade and have never been late for a cruise ship to depart.

Itinerary

12h

1. Warnemünde/Rostock Port

You will start our tour with a direct pick-up at the cruise ship's docking port. You don't have to walk to the remote meeting point or find your way to the coach yourself. Our team will ensure that you are escorted from the port to a modern, air-conditioned coach. Our experienced driver will transport you to Berlin - these 3 hours spent in a comfortable bus will be the perfect time to gather your strength before the tour.

2. Charlottenburg Palace

Our coach will take you all the way to Charlottenburg Palace. Built in the 17th century, this beautiful palace is a perfect example of Berlin's rich architecture. The combination of Baroque and Rococo styles is sure to be memorable. For the curious, we would add that it is the largest palace in Berlin! But our experienced, English-speaking guide will tell you all about this and many other interesting facts as he takes you off the bus to stretch your legs and continue the tour together.

3. Tiergarten

Then, we will drive through Berlin's central park. Admire the lush greenery, so important to vibrant urban life. And there's plenty to admire, as the Tiergarten covers some 520 acres that were once used as hunting grounds. Now they provide a resting place for weary residents.

4. Victory Column

When you're in the Tiergarten, you can't miss the famous Victory Column. The golden statue, which keeps a close eye on the rich life of the city, is Victoria - the goddess of victory. She has witnessed many historic moments in Berlin and remains a reminder of the city's turbulent history. She is identified with the country's military and political development and is proof to visitors of the validity of their desire to learn about Berlin's history.

5. Reichstag

Next, we will head to another historic symbol of the city - the Reichstag.

It is best known for its controversial fire in 1933, after Hitler's rise to power. Now renovated after the war, the building has become a bold symbol of modern German democracy. A mandatory stop on our journey of learning about Berlin's history.

Here we will also leave the bus and spend the rest of the tour on foot.

6. Brandenburg Gate

Our next stop is just a short walk away - the Brandenburg Gate. The monument to Berlin and a symbol of the entire country. This neoclassical building is often referred to as the most important cultural monument in Germany. And for good reason. Its turbulent history - from being built as a symbol of peace to becoming a symbol of division during the Cold War - makes it worth taking the time to dive into its history.

7. Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

After leaving Pariser Platz, we head to an intriguing site. A huge field of concrete blocks, unevenly stacked in the square. Without knowing the significance of the place, you might think it's just the beginning of a larger structure. But our guide will make sure you learn the context of this place. This is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe - built in 2005. A place that promises to remember the Jews murdered during the Holocaust. We will spend time reflecting on and making our own interpretation of this monument, which reminds us of the infamous tragedy of World War II.

8. Lunch

Here we will take a short lunch break lasting about 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately, time constraints won't allow us to take a longer break, but your guide will show you places with many fast food options and access to bathrooms.

9. Museum Island and Travel to Sachsenhausen

After lunch, we will take a walk along the Spree River to see the vast archive of history and culture - Museum Island. This complex consists of five world-famous museums: the Altes Museum (Old Museum), the Neues Museum (New Museum), the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum. The museums conceal artifacts from the eras of antiquity, through Byzantium to the 19th century. No wonder the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We will then board back on our coachand drive to the Sachsenhausen Memorial. This one-hour drive will be the perfect time for a little rest.

10. Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial

When you arrive at the camp, our guide will spend plenty of time giving you a full introduction to the history of the site. During the 60-75 minute explanation, you will learn why this one of the first concentration camps established by the Nazis played such an important role. This well-preserved reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust serves as a reminder of the importance of human history, even its tragic moments.

Afterwards, we will return to the bus, where the guide will answer final questions and say goodbye to us, leaving valuable stories.

11. Warnemünde/Rostock Port

At the end, the coach will take you straight to the port. You don't have to worry about the time, as everything is organized under the ship's schedule. You will be guaranteed a punctual return with enough time to board the ship in peace.
