Overview

This private tour with a guide and a vehicle combines the highlights of Hamburg with a visit to the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial – where over 40,000 died as a result of starvation, disease, forced marches and brutality at the hands of the SS.

You will be met by one of our professional, local guides and a private driver and vehicle, either at your hotel or a pre-agreed meeting point. The first portion of the tour focuses on the historic heart of Hamburg.  You will visit the stunning, neo-renaissance Town Hall, Deichstrasse and its iconic ‘Kontor’ buildings, and St. Nicholas’s Church (the tower still a burnt out shell because of devastating allied fire-bombings in WW2). We then head into the heart of the old Medieval City and over the Trostbrücke (Hamburg’s oldest bridge) before exploring the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt (the largest collection of warehouses in the world and now Hamburg’s trendiest district), and marvelling at the the modern architectural splendour of the Elbphilharmonie.

After a short break you will then be driven to the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial. Starting in the main camp you will visit the Former Prisoners’ Barracks, the SS Guardhouse and Watchtower and the House of Remembrance. You will then visit three of Neuengamme’s preserved satellite camps: Bullenhuser Damm – where SS physician Dr Kurt Heißmeyer conducted tuberculosis experiments on prisoners; Poppenbüttel, where forced labourers who cleared the streets after Allied bombing raids were imprisoned; and Fuhlsbüttel, the first camp opened in the Neuengamme network. Sites visited in the subcamps include the Rose Garden for the Children of Bullenhuser Damm and the Peace Tree Memorial.

As always, your expert guide will provide an in-depth commentary throughout and contextualise all sites visited on the tour. They will then accompany you on your vehicle transfer back to Hamburg.
