Berlin is a beautiful city to experience during the holiday season. Dozens of Christmas markets (the highest number of any city in Germany) spring up all over town to spread festive cheer with local handicrafts, hearty food, live shows, and Glühwein – spiced warm wine.
This 4-hour tour whisks you away to a world of yuletide wonder, visiting three of the city’s best Christmas markets. As some markets are ‘special events’ or local affairs, they only open on certain days or weekends. For that reason, we tailor our itineraries depending on when you book. The following is a sample route to help you better understand the experience.
You will be met by a professional, local guide either at your hotel or a prearranged meeting point. Using the public transportation system you will travel to the west of the city to spend some time exploring the market on the grounds of the Charlottenburg Palace. Warm yourself with a Glühwein and sample some traditional sausage and kale stew, bathed in the glow of the illuminated palace.
Next up we visit the market at Gendarmenmarkt, widely regarded as the best Christmas market held in Berlin’s historical city centre. Here you will have the chance to wander the rabbit warren of stalls in the shadow of the stunning French and German Domes to peruse some of the finest local handicrafts produced in Berlin and surrounding Brandenburg. Finally, we head to Prenzlauer Berg and the Scandinavian-themed Lucia Christmas Market at the Kulturbrauerei – a former 19th century brewery-turned-cultural complex. Here you will have the opportunity to taste hot blueberry and cherry wines and dishes from some of Berlin’s most acclaimed street food carts.
Throughout the tour, your guide will talk you through German Christmas traditions and their origins, and also provide historical commentary on the buildings and sites that you pass. At the end of the tour they will accompany you back to your hotel, or, if you prefer, you can spend more time enjoying the last market.
