Overview

This 4-hour walking tour of Berlin’s highlights is for history and photography buffs, or those who would like a professional set of photographs of their time in Berlin.

One of our local experts – also a professional photographer – will meet you at your hotel, or a pre-arranged meeting point, and give you a crash course in Berlin’s history, as well as advice on photographing the city’s most iconic monuments. They will also take some memorable shots of you, so you can remember your visit.

See the Reichstag, which burned down after Hitler’s rise to power but now stands as a bold symbol of modern German democracy. Pass through the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin’s most iconic landmark before walking in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, and crossing the border at Checkpoint Charlie, the frontier of the Cold War. Next, journey through the iconic concrete stelae of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and learn about the tragedy of the holocaust, before standing in the heart of Museum Island, the city’s architectural centre and a UNESCO world heritage site.

Time will also be taken to explore the old Nazi government quarter where you can see remaining examples of Nazi architecture, such as the former SS and Gestapo Headquarters and the site of Hitler’s Bunker. You will also experience the pomp and grandeur of Prussian Berlin in Gendarmenmarkt and Bebelplatz, two of Berlin’s most beautiful squares, and much, much more...

At each stop, your guide/photographer will give you practical advice about photography and help you find the best shots for your own snaps. They will also spend time at certain stops photographing you with some of Berlin’s most impressive and well-known monuments. At the end of the tour, you will be accompanied back to your hotel, or a drop-off point of your choosing. Your edited photographs will then be sent to you digitally after the tour.

As always your experience can be tailored to your preferences, so please let us know if you have any special requests or needs. We are also more than happy to help you with restaurant reservations and museum or gallery visits.

Itinerary

4h

1. Hotel Pick-up

Your professional, local guide will meet you at your hotel and introduce you to Berlin and the tour. They will also take some time to discuss photography technique, your equipment, and what sort of photographs you would like to take.

2. Museum Island

At your first stop time will be taken to marvel at the stunning structures and imperial splendor of this UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. See the Old Museum, the Berlin City Palace, the Berlin Cathedral and more. The Lustgarten is an excellent spot to begin taking some photos.

3. Neue Wache

Next we pay tribute to the victims of war and tyranny at Germany's central national war memorial. Take some poignant shots of ‘The Mother Holding her Dead Son’ – a metaphor for trauma.

4. Bebelplatz

After a short walk down Unter den Linden you will visit the site of the Nazi Book Burning that took place on the 10th May 1933.

5. Gendarmenmarkt

We then move on to bathe in the architectural splendor of Berlin's most beautiful square. See the French and German Domes and the Concert House. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful squares north of the Alps, it’s a perfect spot to have your photo taken.

6. Checkpoint Charlie

You will then have the chance to cross between East and West at the most famous border crossing point over the Berlin Wall, frontline of the Cold War, where spies roamed and US and Soviet tanks faced off in 1961.

7. The Berlin Wall/Topography of Terror

Next we head to the dark heart of Nazi Germany at the former headquarters of the SS and Gestapo and come face-to-face with the Cold War's most brutal symbol: The Berlin Wall.

8. Former Reich Aviation Ministry

Time will then be taken to walk through the old Nazi government quarter and see one of the last remaining pieces of Nazi architecture in the city centre.

9. Site of Hitler’s Bunker

We will then stand at the site of the bunker where history's most notorious criminal committed suicide at the end of WWII.

10. Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Moving on we will take plenty of time to journey through the iconic field of concrete blocks, and bear witness the atrocities of National Socialism. Your guide will discuss the ethics of photography and social media at memorial sites such as this.

11. Reichstag

Next we stand in the shadow of the German parliament building, burned down after Hitler’s rise to power, now a bold symbol of modern German democracy. Catch the German flag rippling in the breeze in front of the building on film.

12. Brandenburg Gate

Finally you will walk through the gateways of Berlin's most iconic monument and find out what makes the Gate the most important cultural monument in Germany. After a comprehensive photo stop, the tour will end here.
