Overview

Have you ever wondered why Berlin became the central hotspot of the Cold War? When the Berlin Wall was constructed in August 1961 families and friends were separated overnight - some for 28 years. Through this virtual exploration, you will discover how the city was divided, becoming one of the only locations in the world where the Cold War superpowers lived next door to one another. Wander along a former stretch of the Wall bordering previous grounds of Nazi SS and Gestapo headquarters, pass the Trabi-Museum and discover how World War Three was narrowly avoided at the famous Checkpoint Charlie.

This is a private live virtual tour. Our professional, local guide will be showing you Berlin’s most fascinating sights in real time, directly from the streets of Berlin. You will be connected via video call and you can then explore the city together. With your experienced guide you will see more than just the Berlin of today, you’ll also get a glimpse back in time because each tour is complemented with an excellent selection of multimedia. You will be shown historic photographs and videos to help with explanations, stories and the historical context of Berlin's incredible and turbulent past. You can’t get any closer to history without a time machine!

The entire tour is designed to be as interactive as you desire. You can ask questions, you can request to go back and look at something again, you have all the freedom and participation of a private walking tour, all from the comfort of your own home.

The video calling software used for the tour is called Zoom. You will need to have it downloaded on your laptop, tablet or cellphone – with a connection to speakers or headphones – in order to participate in the tour. Also, remember to keep an eye on the time difference when choosing a time for your private virtual experience, as all times stated are in Berlin time!

Itinerary

1h

1. Gropius Bau

Your virtual experience begins at one of Berlin's premier, and most beautiful, art galleries – still bullet-scarred from the Second World War.

2. Topography of Terror

We then make our way to the dark heart of Nazi Germany at the former SS and Gestapo headquarters, and walk along the most brutal symbol of the Cold War – the Berlin Wall.

3. Trabi Museum

Next we head to see a fleet of Trabants – East Germany's mass-manufactured 'cardboard car'.

4. Checkpoint Charlie

We then cross the border at the most famous crossing point over the Berlin Wall, where a tank standoff in 1961 had the world on the nuclear knife-edge. We end the tour at the excellent 'Black Box' exhibition.
