Named after the great literary figures who walked its streets, this bohemian district is one of Madrid's most vibrant and exciting neighbourhoods. Learn about some of Spain's most influential writers, such as Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Gongora, and Cervantes as your local guide shows you cobblestones on which you can see inscriptions and short texts from some of their works. Historically, a region outside of the city walls, where rumors and gossip ran rife, the literary quarter became the most alternative area of Spain. It was re-discovered in the 20th century by writers such as Hemmingway, who found in this quarter the inspiration that they were looking for. Nowadays, lined with chic bistros and boutiques, the literary quarter is a favorite amongst artists, tourists, and locals alike.
